OHC offers an invaluable introduction to diverse health professions. Participants gain firsthand exposure to healthcare professionals and facilities within their own communities, fostering a deeper understanding of these vital careers. Best of all, it’s completely free for student participants and can be seamlessly tailored to virtual environments, ensuring accessibility for all aspiring healthcare professionals. Eligible Host Sites

SW ID AHEC partners with organizations that align with our mission to improve the distribution, diversity, and supply of the primary healthcare workforce, with a special emphasis on meeting the needs of rural and underserved areas. Examples of the types of organizations are listed below.

  • High Schools
  • Community Health Centers
  • Critical Access Hospitals
  • Rural Health Clinics
  • Free Medical Clinics
Host Site Responsbilities

Sites that are interested in hosting the Orientation to Health Careers program are responsible for the following things.

  • Student recruitment – minimum of 10 students for participation
  • Assistance in the collection of parent/guardian permission forms and student surveys for submission to SW ID AHEC
  • Arranging transportation for facility tour & payment for transportation
  • Submission of a final report to SW ID AHEC along with receipts for purchases
SW ID AHEC Responsibilities

SW ID AHEC will provide the following at all Orientation to Health Careers events.

  • Promo flyer for students (and parents for students under 18)
  • Permission slips (for students under 18)
  • AHEC Career Exploration Presentation
    • Introduction to AHEC
    • Is a Health Career Right for You?
    • Health Careers and Academic Pathways
    • Hot Health Care Jobs in Idaho
    • Idaho Health Career Training Programs
    • How to Prepare for a Health Career
    • Paying for College
  • Presentations by medical, dental, behavioral health, and public health professionals
  • A virtually guided hands-on activity session (optional)
  • Pre and post-event student surveys – online and paper options
